We’re already HUGE fans of Single Dad Laughing blog (AKA Dan Pearce), but his recent post “I’m Christian, Unless You’re Gay” not only inspired us, it inspired a gay teen Jacob to come out to his very conservative parents. Brace yourselves: it’s an emotional story.
We’ll leave the details to SDL’s blog, but the kid was assigned to read Single Dad Laughing’s article and write an essay about how it made him feel. He shows the assignment to his mother who explains (in her letter included in this article) that she was disgusted/out-raged/horrified by the assignment and demanded her son not participate. The teen is hurt by this and makes a stand: He writes a STUNNING essay and also comes out to his very religiously-conservative mother.
Here’s just a snippet to get you hooked (and possible teary-eyed) you can read the rest, here:
“I am gay and only my one friend knows so far. My mom doesn’t know yet. My dad doesn’t know yet. You didn’t know it when you gave us this homework. I am only 15 years old and I have never felt so alone. My mom and dad always are being angry about gay people and talking about how they are bad and going to hell and they also always talk about how all the gays should be shipped off to their own private island or something so that the rest of us could live God’s commandments in peace.”
We are overwhelmed with Jacob’s bravery, but also with Single Dad Laughing’s inspirational post. This just proves: what you put out there can (and will) affect everyone in the world — so use it wisely. (Photo credit: danoah.com)
